Evaluation of Alfalfa (Medicago sativa) and Sericea Lespedeza (Lespedeza cuneata) to Improve Animal Performance in a Tall Fescue-Based Grazing System

چکیده

Tall fescue [Schedonorus arundinaceous (Schreb.) Dumort. nom. cons. Lolium arundinaceum Darbysh.] is the dominant pasture grass across much of southeast USA. The species productive, but grows slowly in summer. Plants also harbor an endophytic fungus (Epichloe coenophiala), which produces alkaloids that are toxic to cattle. Adding summer-productive forages fescue-based systems may benefit animal production by providing extra herbage and diluting toxins. A three-year study was conducted Virginia, USA determine vegetation responses when alfalfa (Medicago sativa) or Sericea lespedeza (Lespedeza cuneata (Dum. Cours.) G. Don) swards were established into tall pastures. Average daily gain (ADG) steers seasonal mass dynamics monitored from 2016 2018. Forage weed composition measurements collected address a secondary objective sericea might suppress weeds through allelopathy. Steer performance acceptable (0.73 kg d?1 ADG), interseeded legumes did not improve weight gain. Steers avoided plants, this resulted greater accumulation summer compared with other treatments. Alfalfa selectively grazed cover decreased almost zero year 3, while increased over 82%. We found little evidence allelopathic against weeds. Neither legume proved be satisfactory improving grazing system.

Detecting invasive sericea lespedeza (Lespedeza cuneata) in Mid-Missouri pastureland using hyperspectral imagery.

Missouri ranks second in cow-calf numbers in the United States and its pastureland has experienced invasion of various plant species. As one of the invasive weeds, sericea lespedeza is becoming a serious threat to pasturelands in this state. The in-situ field survey in these vast pastures is time consuming and often impossible because of accessibility. Typical aerial survey is also difficult to...

Sericea lespedeza (Lespedeza cuneata cv. Interstate 76) and little bluestem (Schizachyrium scoparium cv. Following a 7-day adjustment period, each of six OTCs (duplicate OTCs per treatment) was ventilated with either air that had been carbon-filtered (CF) to remove...

Effect of Ensiling on Anti-parasitic Properties of Sericea Lespedeza

A study was designed to determine the effects of feeding ensiled sericea lespedeza (SL; Lespedeza cuneata) on gastrointestinal nematode (GIN) and coccidia (Eimeria spp.) infections in young goats. A 28-day confinement study was completed with 36 nine-month-old Spanish bucks (53.8 ± 8.1 lbs) fed 3 diets consisting of SL silage, chopped SL hay, or ground bermudagrass (BG; Cynodon dactylon) hay (7...

Forage systems for cow-calf production in the Appalachian region.

Small cow-calf operations are common in the Appalachian region. Tall fescue [Lolium arundinaceum (Schreb.) S. J. Darbyshire] is the dominant forage in these systems for direct grazing as well as for stockpiling. The present study was conducted from 2001 to 2005. A total of 108 Angus and Angus crossbred cows were allotted randomly to 6 forage systems and then to 3 replicates within each system. ...

Soil Bacteria and Fungi Respond on Different Spatial Scales to Invasion by the Legume Lespedeza cuneata

The spatial scale on which microbial communities respond to plant invasions may provide important clues as to the nature of potential invader-microbe interactions. Lespedeza cuneata (Dum. Cours.) G.
